MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
LINDA PARKER ‘78, B.A., B. ED., M. ED.
The Bermuda High School provides a world-class education for girls in Years 1-11, and for young women and men in our International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. Our mission is to educate our students to the highest international standards and to foster confident, resilient, responsible global citizens. We have a great legacy of which we are very proud, and we continually build on this to sustain the relevance of BHS today, and for the future.
Founded in 1894, The Bermuda High School is the only single-sex school for girls in Bermuda. We are accredited by the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges— two international bodies endorsing the school as a centre of excellence and leadership. We were the first IB school on the island, and we have been a Global Round Square School since 2005.
As a Round Square member, we join a worldwide network of innovative schools in 40 countries across five continents, sharing an approach to education based on six IDEALS drawn on the theories of educational philosopher, Kurt Hahn. They are Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service. We instill each of these IDEALS through the teaching methods, extra-curricular offerings, and opportunities for travel that are on offer for our students. We also foster Hahn’s founding conviction that “There is more in you than you think.”
At BHS, faculty members are committed to keeping their teaching dynamic and forward thinking, and to furthering their professional development. We are actively looking at ways to incorporate the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) as a matter of priority, to best prepare our students for the future.
Our overriding school philosophy is “Inspiring Excellence and Leadership”. Our external examination results consistently speak to this excellence year after year, and are a testament both to the students’ focus and hard work, and to the quality of our teaching staff. Beyond academics, it is our students’ exposure to global thinking, compassion, social consciousness, sustainability, smart risk-taking and teamwork that shapes them into balanced, productive citizens poised for success. Our young people speak often about the caring and nurturing environment at BHS, and they give back in so many ways.
I would like to thank our hard-working staff and trustees, engaged parents and alumni and most of all, our wonderful students for upholding the values and commitments that make BHS the great school that it is. I am truly proud to celebrate alongside them this week.
